Chapada de Minas obtains Geographical Indication for coffees
The Chapada de Minas region, in the Jequitinhonha Valley, achieved this Tuesday (24) the registration of Geographical Indication (GI) in the Indication of Origin (IP) modality.
With the new certification, Chapada becomes the eighth recognized coffee-growing region in Minas Gerais. Comprising 22 municipalities and approximately 5,800 producers, Chapada de Minas cultivates roughly 30,000 hectares of coffee, with an estimated annual production of 400,000 sacks. The activity involves around 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, consolidating coffee farming as a strategic axis of the regional economy.
The sensory profile of these coffees is characterized by sweetness, intense body, and a long finish, with balanced malic acidity and notes of chocolate, caramel, and red fruits.
Geographical Indications (GIs) in Brazil go through a lengthy approval process. Although the registration request was filed in September 2024, since 2018 Sebrae Minas and ICCM have been providing technical and managerial training to producers, as well as including them in consulting programs, to strengthen governance and competitiveness in the region. The process also included the creation of the "Chapada de Minas" territorial brand.
