15 Mount Austin JB Cafes For All-Day Brunch, Orh Nee Desserts And More

Mount Austin is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Johor Bahru (JB) to visit when I want to enjoy some peace and quiet, away from the bustling city.

I usually go there for good coffee and desserts over conversations with friends, but with so many cafes sprouting up on every corner, you may feel spoilt for choice. Hopefully, our Mount Austin JB cafe guide comes in handy while you’re planning your itinerary.

• 1. The Blue Door Coffee House

Hidden behind a huge blue door on the second floor, along a row of cafes and restaurants, is The Blue Door Coffee House. This spacious cafe can easily seat more than 50 customers at once, and offers a wide range of trendy matcha and pistachio-flavoured drinks and desserts.

We recommend starting with the popular Pistachio Cookies Mochi Croissant (RM18), which is essentially a flaky croissant packed with chewy mochi, and topped with velvety smooth pistachio cream. Their Matcha Basque (RM18) is said to be popular too!

To go with your desserts, get a refreshing Matcha Ah Yuzu (RM20) that blends the bitter, earthy notes of matcha with sweet-tangy yuzu. If you can’t get enough matcha, try the crowd-favourite Matchamisu (RM24), featuring coffee-soaked ladyfingers with Niko Neko matcha-spiked mascarpone.

• 2. Attic by RAW

If you’re dreaming of Italy or France but don’t have enough AL to fly, make a trip to Attic by RAW pronto. This modern, European-inspired cafe in Mount Austin serves Western-style brunch with a twist, blending in Asian flavours for a fusion menu that stands out.

Their all-day brunch menu features hearty options such as the Beefed-up Shakshuka (RM35+), a flavour-packed dish of Australian minced beef simmered in a spiced tomato sauce, feta, and sous vide eggs, served with grilled sourdough. Another top pick is their Signature Swiss Rosti (RM38+), which comes loaded with a choice of eggs, beef bacon or chicken ham, sauteed mushrooms and more.

• 3. Meow Me Cat House

Meow Me Cat House is one spot for feline lovers. Don’t mistake them for any other cat cafe where you have to pay a cover fee; instead, think of them as a cafe with cats living in it.

You don’t have to pay any entrance fee here, but a minimum spend of RM8 is needed to get a seat. While you’re allowed to pet and play with the adorable furry friends, please be mindful of your speaking volume so that you don’t scare them. We enjoyed the Tiramisu Latte (RM17), a dessert-like beverage comprising an iced latte topped with sweet mascarpone and bitter cocoa powder, then finished with ladyfingers.

For desserts, there was cheesecake on the menu during our visit! We were looking forward to the Matcha-Niko Neko Ajisai (RM21), but it was sold out even before 1pm, so we got the Basque Burnt Cheesecake (RM18) instead.

• 4. Cheevit Cheeva

If the name Cheevit Cheeva rings a bell, it’s probably because you’ve come across them in Thailand. This Thai-famous dessert cafe has more than 10 outlets worldwide at the time of writing, and customers flock to their JB outlet for their tasty bingsu and thearty shokupan toasts.

Their Shokupan Thai Tea Sang-Ka-Ya Bingsu (RM34) is popular for the right reasons: the aromatic Thai tea flavour is rich and addictive, and each shaved ice dessert is big enough for at least three people. We were also pleasantly surprised to see Dubai Dream Toast (RM39) on the menu, which nods to the kunafa dessert trend.

A thick shokupan comes generously topped with crispy pistachio kunafa, sweet chocolate and pistachio drizzles, and a dollop of vanilla ice cream with crushed pistachio bits atop everything. • 5. Sunday Brew Cafe

Sunday Brew Cafe is a cafe in Mount Austin worth checking out, especially if you’re travelling with little ones. We love their picture-perfect cakes, especially the dreamy Strawberry Cream Cake, Tiramisu, and a Matcha-Misu (price TBD) that’s a hit with matcha lovers. Those with a sweet tooth should also try the Korean Strawberry Cream Caramelised Toast (price TBD).

It’s a thick slice of toast topped with fresh cream and juicy berries. If you’re in the mood for something savoury, their Baked Sushi Trays (price TBD) are a fun pick. Choose from three flavours: Mentaiko Salmon Snow Crab, Kimchi Salmon Snow Crab, or Mentaiko Cheesy Tamago.

• 6. Zero Percent

If you’re the type to cafe-hop with your furry friend in tow, swing by Zero Percent. This pet-friendly cafe in Mount Austin is cosy AF. The bonus is that it’s home to a resident husky and a couple of friendly cats, so don’t be surprised if you end up staying longer than planned just to chill with them.

Drink-wise, there’s a decent variety here: go for refreshing fruit blends such as the Dragon Banana (RM14+) or Longan Shake (RM14+), or sip on sparkling drinks like the Passion Fizzy (RM12+) or Rose Lychee Fizzy (RM12+). Otherwise, keep things simple with a classic Cappuccino (RM12+) and a slice of cake for a no-fuss midday treat.

• 7. Knock Knock Cafe

Knock Knock Cafe is the ideal place to bring your date or family for a decent meal, as the cafe offers an inviting ambience that’s not too fancy or casual. Their menu is relatively expansive, with plenty of toast and pasta options, alongside quick bites and drinks for the complete experience.

The Brioche French Toast (RM28++) is part of their all-day brunch menu, starring vibrant fruits and edible flowers atop thick toast drenched in maple syrup. If you don’t mind spending more, try the popular River Prawn Arrabiata Pasta (RM69++): tomato-based pasta topped with fresh scallops, prawns, tobiko, and mussels. We recommend getting the Aburi Mentaiko Fries (RM28++) on the side for a hearty, satisfying meal.

• 8. Slow Day Cafe

Slow Day Cafe is all about matcha, hojicha, and genmaicha. They take their tea-infused treats seriously, so we recommend heading down to give their offerings a try if you don’t want to waste your money on mediocre drinks and desserts.

FYI, the cafe doubles as an art jamming studio, where you can book classes to paint while indulging in their treats. If you’re big on the matcha trend, get a cup of the Strawberry Matcha (RM17.90).

You get three stunning layers of sweet strawberry compote, a matcha shot, and fresh milk. This drink leans milky, which means the bitter, earthy notes of matcha are on the milder side, so it may suit those who are new to matcha.

• 9. Kirin Coffee

Kirin Coffee is the latest kid on the Mount Austin block. Known for its quirky decor and neon-bright colours, the new two-storey cafe brands itself as a “dopamine concept”.

• 10. The Bagel Factory

In a space that was once home to OutLine Cafe, you’ll find The Bagel Factory. And if that name sounds familiar, that’s because this is the cafe’s second outpost after its first in Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

You’ll find almost the same savoury and sweet options here, with one of our faves being the All About Blueberries Bagel (RM18++). It comes with purple-hued, blueberry cream cheese spread and is topped with fresh blueberries, which reminds us a bit of the Smurfs.

For drinks, we promise you can’t go wrong with the Tiramisu Latte (RM18++). It even has a mini bagel as a topping!

• 11. Four Beans

Cafes don’t always have to be about coffee and brunch—Four Beans is a great example. This popular dessert chain serves up Taiwanese shaved ice in various flavours and fillings, making for the perfect treat to share with your friends on a hot day out.

Our favourite was the World of Taro Soy Beancurd (RM16+), comprising soft beancurd, taro beancurd, taro balls, and orh nee chunks, finished with brown sugar and soya milk. We recommend sharing this in a group of three or four!

For a sweet and nutty alternative, their Black Sesame Shaved Ice with Taro Ball (RM19+) is the way to go. You get a pile of shaved black sesame ice topped with chewy taro balls and sweet red beans. Read our Four Beans feature.

• 12. Coffee Garden

We can’t blame you if all you want is some good traditional breakfast and a kopi or local Malaysian food for lunch—after all, you’re still in Malaysia. Coffee Garden is a cosy kopitiam-style cafe in Mount Austin that’s known for their strong and fragrant Nanyang coffee (from RM6.50), served in classic ceramic mugs. If you’re here for a full meal, you’ll be spoilt for choice with their range of local dishes.

Try the Nasi Lemak with Chicken Chop (RM18), or the Ipoh Asam Fish (RM19) if you’re craving something tangy and spicy. There’s also the classic Mee Siam with Chicken Wing (RM13), which makes for a solid brunch option. • 13. 椰西 IÂSE @ Austin

On a sweltering hot day, head to 椰西 IÂSE @ Austin. This popular dessert spot is best known for its coconut-based drinks and sweets, perfect for cooling down in the JB heat. Fans rave about the Mango Sago Coconut Panna Cotta (from RM16.90), a refreshing treat that blends fruity, creamy, and chewy textures all in one.

If you’re just after a drink, the Coconut Milkshake (from RM12.90) is a great pick. It’s thick, icy, and naturally sweet.

• 14. Eggbomb Cafe

With rattan chairs, hanging plants, and a warm neutral palette, Eggbomb Cafe is basically what you’d expect from a millennial’s Pinterest board. But beyond the aesthetic, this Mount Austin cafe delivers on flavour too.

Its menu is packed with bold, creative twists you won’t easily find elsewhere in JB. The Cheesy Kimchi Fried Pancake with Egg (RM12.90) is a must-try if you like your brunch with a kick, while their Sambal Scramble Egg Bagel (RM10.90) adds a local spin to the classic breakfast favourite.

• 15. H&S Cafe

And finally, if you’re heading to JB for seafood but don’t want to miss out on cafe-hopping vibes, check out H&S Cafe. It’s technically a seafood restaurant, but looks and feels like a trendy cafe—perfect for the gram and your appetite.

Their crab dishes are highly raved about, especially the Salted Egg Crab, best enjoyed with a side of fried mantou to mop up all that sauce. Big eaters can go for their XL Crab (from RM78++), which comes in eight flavours, including Signature Spicy Chilli, Creamy Salted Egg, and White Pepper.
