I tried Whispering Angel and Aldi's £8.99 lookalike rosé to see if they compare

It’s also become something of a sunshine-status staple, regularly spotted in celebrity hands, with the likes of Victoria Beckham pictured sipping it in the heat. And it’s not just the A-listers: plenty of us have grabbed a bottle for a special weekend or a celebratory meal, too.

But if you’re simply planning to enjoy a chilled glass of rosé in the garden, you probably won’t want to part with £23 for a bottle unless it’s a proper occasion. That’s where Aldi steps in, with a budget-friendly buy that shoppers say is surprisingly similar – offering the same summery vibe for a fraction of the cost.

The budget supermarket is selling Chassaux Et Fils Sainte Victoire Provence Rosé for just £9 – and a wine expert pointed out that it looks and tastes pretty similar to the high-end version. So here's what you need to know.

Whispering Angel vs Aldi's £8.99 wine

On the Aldi website, the product description reads: "Stylishly pale pink, this dry rosé has complex aromas of citrus fruits and white flowers. Perfect served with scallops, seabass, or your favourite fish dish."

Meanwhile, the Whispering Angel description states: "Whispering Angel is today’s worldwide reference for Provence rosé. Made from Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle (Vermentino) grapes, its pale colour is pleasing to the eye and draws one in.

The rewarding taste profile is full and lush, while being bone dry with a smooth finish. A blend of the best free run juices and press juices, fermented and aged in stainless steel with temperature control."

The luxury version definitely sounds fancier – and there's a slight difference in the colour too. Whispering Angel is more of a salmon-pink than Aldi's rosé, but the look is otherwise pretty similar.

The packaging on both products is photogenic and classy, featuring fancy calligraphy to draw the eye in. But how do they actually taste?

Wine expert's review

Lucy Hitchcock, who runs the Partner in Wine Instagram page, shared her honest verdict in a video that's been liked 91,000 times.

She said: "Aldi is really taking things to the next level with this dupe." Apparently, the wines use the same four grape varieties sourced from Sainte Victoire in Provence, which gives them quite a similar taste. After sipping the budget option, she said: "Now that is a stunning rosé.

"I can definitely taste the similarities in the blend. I'm getting summer berries like raspberry and strawberry with a lovely pink grapefruit freshness.

At the end, I'm getting something softer like white peach and melon." While the notes taste similarly on her tastebuds the wine expert believes the upmarket bottle has a fruity flavour that comes through more.

She added: "Whispering Angel does have that same mouth-watering freshness and smooth texture that we know and love, but the fruit is more concentrated, and there is something different - there is a purity to it." While Lucy couldn't decide which bottle is best, she believes both are brilliant options.

But if you want something affordable and tasty, Aldi is definitely worth a try!
