"Extreme temperatures and drought are having a significant impact on the vineyards," emphasizes winemaker Giuseppe Figlioli, a member of the DOC Sicilia board of directors. "Our vineyards are increasingly exposed to unpredictable weather events. Despite the difficulties in achieving significant yields, on the one hand, the vineyards have perfectly preserved their quality, and on the other, Sicilian producers are demonstrating extraordinary tenacity and determination in protecting their crops."
After last year's problems with downy mildew, this year's warm, dry weather prevented the spread of fungal diseases. "The quality of the grapes is excellent, and the vines are in excellent condition, with no particular risk of disease," concludes Figlioli.
During the winter and spring, Sicily experienced well-below-average rainfall. Subsequently, extreme weather events, such as the scorching heat and drought of the first half of summer, caused the vines to bud 15 days early. Flowering, usually in May, also moved forward to April. And so on, with a total advance of 10-12 days. In many areas, the use of private lakes and water reserves mitigated the effects of the drought, ensuring high-quality production.
