Hamburger Mary’s to Open in Dallas Amid the State’s Heavy Slate of Anti-Trans Bills
Dallas is getting a new hamburger spot. For those who don’t know, Hamburger Mary’s features dive-y vibes, burgers (obviously), and events hosted by drag performers. From June 1 to the 5, the restaurant will celebrate its grand opening week, set to coincide with Pride Week.
Hamburger Mary’s is coming to Oak Lawn and will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and yes, that will include drag brunch. The opening is happening amid the Texas legislator filing the largest slate of anti-trans bills in the country in its current session and earning itself a condemnation from the Human Rights Campaign. Among the 30 bills put before the leg is Senate Bill 12, the authors of which say it aims broadly to protect children from sexually explicit performances under the state’s existing public indecency code. The bill calls out performances by “a male performer exhibiting as a female, or a female performer exhibiting as a male, who uses clothing, makeup, or other similar physical markers and who sings, lip syncs, dances, or otherwise performs before an audience” with a list of sexually suggestive behaviors that are prohibited.

Julian and Alexa Rodarte collaborated to cook up Temakeria, a new sushi, handroll, and sashimi spot that will open on Tuesday, May 16. It will also serve tamakeria, a taco-shaped sushi handroll, to be enjoyed like the food Texans already know and love. The decor is all black and white and in 2D with walls covered in original hand-drawn art from Dallas local Jonathan Freeman, also known as Jonathan Krown. The food will be served on printed temaki holders from organic, plant-based, food-safe PLA material.
