Dijon mustard, with its grainy texture and refined yet slightly acidic flavor, adds a divine touch to a ham and cheese sandwich on a croissant. But it also has the potential to elevate your fried chicken recipe to another level, to the point of making it practically stratospheric!

Dijon mustard adds a rich, sophisticated flavor that complements other common spices for fried chicken, such as seasoned salt, black or white pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Furthermore, Dijon mustard tenderizes chicken in a way similar to buttermilk, making it a good alternative if you don't have either of those on hand.

The easiest way to ensure your chicken has a tangy mustard kick in every bite is to mix a little Dijon mustard into the wet ingredients at your breading station before dipping the chicken. Or you can even double it. It's one of the reasons you need to keep mustard powder in your pantry. Amazon sells a British brand called Colman's, whose mustard powder has a tangy kick that complements the rich Dijon flavor of the egg coating.

Ways to get even more Dijon mustard flavor in your fried chicken

For a more intense Dijon mustard flavor, skip the traditional egg wash with a sprinkle of Dijon mustard and instead use a brush to generously coat the chicken directly. You can do this before or after adding the seasonings. Then, dip the coated chicken in a bag of flour. Finally, fry it as usual.

If you have boneless chicken in the fridge, you can follow a similar procedure for a breaded and baked meal. Place the chicken pieces on a baking sheet and coat them with Dijon mustard. Then, prepare a coating with panko breadcrumbs seasoned to your liking. Mix it with a little oil and your preferred spices. You can even add a small handful of melted cheese to the mixture. Place the coating over the Dijon mustard-coated chicken and bake as usual until the chicken is cooked through and the coating is crispy. You can prepare an entire meal on a single baking sheet, starting with some crispy roasted vegetables.
