Pago de Tharsys Millésime Rosé places Requena at the top of Spanish cava
Jaime Nicolau
“Cava is the drink of happiness.” The phrase comes from Rebeca García, marketing director of Pago de Tharsys. And her words resonate even more these days, as one of their cavas, Pago de Tharsys Millésime Rosé 2023, has been crowned by Master of Wine Tim Atkin as the best “Sparkling” (sparkling wine) in Spain for 2026. “Fine, subtle, and elegant, this sparkling wine made with Garnacha grapes displays a concentration characteristic of old vines. Aromas of wild strawberry, pomegranate, and dried herbs give way to a complex palate, with delicate notes of bread and a long, refined finish. A Cava of great class,” reads Atkin’s exact comment about this cava. The news is doubly well-deserved for Pago de Tharsys, as they have been producing high-quality cavas for 40 years under the guidance of Vicente García, Rebeca’s father, and also “the father of Cava from Requena.” It was he, returning to his native Requena after working for prestigious wineries in the Penedès region, who, along with other winegrowers, began producing this sparkling wine at Torre Oria. From there, the story unfolds, and after a legal battle with the Cava Designation of Origin in the 1980s, the landmark ruling was issued allowing the production of Cava throughout the entire municipality of Requena. Pure history and pure magic.
The prestigious Master of Wine has awarded Pago de Tharsys Millésime Rosé 2023 a total of 96 points, crowning it Best Sparkling Wine of the Year Spain and establishing Requena as a leading name in top-quality Cava. This recognition is a testament to Requena's enviable climatic conditions for sparkling wine production, with its altitude of 700 to 1000 meters serving as a tremendous asset and a key differentiator from other wine-producing regions. Furthermore, this accolade comes in the same year that Requena is named Spanish City of Wine, providing yet another reason to justify this well-deserved title.
What is the price of Tharsys Millésime Rosé?
Made entirely from Garnacha Tinta grapes and aged for 30 months on the lees, Pago de Tharsys' sparkling rosé is fresh, elegant, and has extra-fine bubbles. It's a great choice to enjoy during the summer and the Mediterranean sun, and a magnificent accompaniment to appetizers, rice dishes, fish, seafood, and Mediterranean cuisine.
There are wines that speak of their origin: the landscape, the terroir, and how a family has learned to interpret them for generations. Pago de Tharsys Millésime Rosé Reserva 2023 is born from this philosophy. Crafted by one of the pioneering Cava wineries in Requena, this sparkling rosé embodies over four decades of experience, knowledge, and respect for a region firmly established as one of Spain's premier Cava-producing areas. Made entirely from Garnacha Tinta grapes and aged for 30 months on its lees, it stands out for its elegance, freshness, and exceptionally fine bubbles. This gastronomic sparkling wine invites you to savor summer without sacrificing complexity, reflecting, glass by glass, the potential of Requena's high-altitude vineyards and the unmistakable style of Pago de Tharsys.
Four decades making history in the Cava of Requena
Long before Pago de Tharsys officially opened its doors in 2002, the García family was already producing cava. In fact, when the winery began operations, its first bottles of sparkling wine were ready for market. Today, after 24 years under the Pago de Tharsys brand and more than four decades of experience producing sparkling wines using the traditional method, the winery continues to be one of the leading cava producers in Requena.
Behind this story is Vicente García, considered the father of Valencian Cava. After specializing in sparkling wine production in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia during the 1970s, he decided to return to his hometown of Requena with an idea that seemed revolutionary at the time: to produce Cava in a region almost exclusively dominated by red wines. This gamble not only changed the course of the winery but also that of Valencian viticulture as a whole. Today, more than four decades later, Requena has established itself as one of the most dynamic areas within the Cava DO. Its wineries produce more than fifteen million bottles a year and have positioned the region among the most promising in Spain. A path that began with Vicente García's vision and is now being continued by the second generation of his family.
