MaRe, Capitaneo's new restaurant in Milan: menu and prices
A social media post: this is the way to communicate new openings, and it's how the Capitaneo brothers announced the opening of their new restaurant, MaRe in Duomo, in Milan. The exact address is Piazza del Duomo 21, the same as their restaurant Verso, which remains open on the second floor of the building.
It goes without saying that Ma.Re, in addition to being the main gastronomic figure in the kitchen, is an acronym for the names of the two brothers, MArio and REmo. From social media: "Two identities, two sensibilities, a shared journey that today finds a new expression."
The building is the one to the left of the Galleria, where the piazza and the Galleria meet. Verso opened in 2023, the same year it received two Michelin stars, on the second floor of the building.
The Capitaneo brothers' MaRe menu
The menu opens with a selection of raw fish, with no indication of any accompanying dishes. They range from oysters (Rosa La Perla del Delta and Regal Selezione Oro) to scallops, all priced at €8 each. Further up, there are Porcupine Scampi and Ortigia Red Prawns (both €15), Cuttlefish (€18), Japanese Amberjack (€20), and Balfegò Bluefin Tuna (€26).
The Capitaneos' attention to detail in selecting the raw materials for their MaRe restaurant is evident right here. Porcupine are prized crustaceans, caught in the deep waters of the Porcupine Bank, off the southwest coast of Ireland. The tuna produced by the Balfegò company in Catalonia is caught and placed in permanent nets, where it is fed sardines and mackerel.
At MaRe, caviar is a must, which the Capitaneos serve with blinis and sour cream (Tradition Rpyal 30g, €90; Oscietra 30g, €110), or with a poached egg (€35) or egg tagliolini (€45). There are also salads (Catalan-style red prawns, €45; cuttlefish and artichokes, €24; potatoes, green beans, and marinated eggs, €45) and soups (mussels, €20; baby octopus, €28).
The seafood first courses (four options, from €35 to €40) include spaghetti with clams, tubetti with cacciucco (fish soup), and lobster eliche (fish shells). But unexpectedly, a saffron risotto with veal reduction appears (€30), which seems a bit out of place; I was expecting a simple seafood risotto. A thought for those who don't like fish, anyway.
MaRe's second courses feature the Capitaneos grilling Japanese amberjack, bluefin tuna, sole meunière, scallops, cuttlefish, and octopus. From €26 to €45. Another meat-forward dish is a beef fillet from Varvara, priced at €32.
Side dishes: Roman-style artichokes (€8), asparagus with Echire' butter (€14), agretti (€10), cardoncelli (€12).
How much does it cost on average to eat at MaRe?
A first and second course will set you back around 70 euros; choosing one or more courses from the raw fish menu can set you back around 100 euros.
The actual opening of Mario and Remo Capitaneo's MaRe restaurant (currently silently opening) is scheduled for the end of September.
All the Glamore Group locations in Duomo
Piazza Duomo 21 is home to a series of venues, all part of the Glamore Group, a leading Italian company in the sector, led by Carlo Grimoldi. Glamore also owns The Glamore Milano Duomo hotel, several exclusive clubs in central and northern Italy, and major F&B businesses.
On the first floor we find the restaurant The View by Valerio Braschi, who moved here from the fifth.
On the second floor, Verso, the two-Michelin-star restaurant run by brothers Mario and Remo Capitaneo. According to the Michelin Guide, "The true value of the experience also lies in the scenic dimension of the service: watching the team at work, in perfect synchronicity, is a small spectacle of precision and rigor, made up of measured gestures, glances, and impeccable technique."
Going up, Duomo 21, and Terrazza Duomo.
And on the fifth floor, overlooking the Duomo and the center of Milan, the Capitaneo family again with their new seafood restaurant MaRe.
The announcement on Instagram: A place where the sea becomes matter, memory, and research.
