Must-Visit Outdoor Breweries in Northern New Jersey

The warmer weather means it’s time to indulge in all things outdoors — including enjoying a brew al fresco at a local spot.

902 Brewing Company | 101 Pacific Avenue, Jersey City

902 Brewing Company got its start with a homebrewing kit in a Hoboken apartment before opening its brick-and-mortar brewery at 101 Pacific Avenue in Jersey City in 2020. The space features a nearly 2,000-square-foot industrial taproom and a rooftop deck with views of the New York City skyline. The brewery serves a rotating selection of ales and lagers.

Bolero Snort began commercial production in 2013 and opened its production facility + taproom in Carlstadt in 2020. Located in the Meadowlands, the brewery has indoor seating as well as outdoor spaces, including a beer garden and patio. Its rotating beer selection ranges from lagers and IPAs to inventive sour ales and seasonal releases.

Cricket Hill Brewing Co. | 24 Kulick Road, Fairfield

Established in 2001, Cricket Hill is one of New Jersey’s original craft breweries. After more than 24 years under longtime owners Rick and Ed, new owners Andrew and Jeff are carrying the brewery into its next chapter. The Fairfield brewery has a taproom and outdoor beer garden, with a lineup spanning IPAs, ales, sours, lagers, stouts, and porters. Cricket Hill also regularly hosts live music and other events.

Czig Meister Brewing | Main Street Czig Parking Lot, Behind Dollar General, 106 Valentine Street Brewery 100, Hackettstown

As another dog-friendly + family-friendly establishment, Czig Meister Brewing Company is a historic gem in Hackettstown, New Jersey. The building dates back to around 1900 and was originally a carriage house during Hackettstown’s flourishing horse-drawn carriage industry. Today, it operates as a craft brewery with spacious outdoor seating, including a German-style Biergarten.

Departed Soles Brewery | 150 Bay Street #2A, Jersey City

Departed Soles opened in Jersey City in 2015 and has been serving locally brewed beer ever since, including gluten-free options. The brewery has an array of outdoor seating, with heat lamps nearby for chillier days. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome both indoors and in the outdoor seating area.

Diamond Spring Brewing Company | 50 Broadway, Denville

Located in the heart of Downtown Denville, Diamond Spring Brewing Company occupies a transformed 1960s service station. Its outdoor setup includes a 6,000-square-foot gravel beer garden with picnic tables, umbrellas, Adirondack chairs, and outdoor games. The pet-friendly + family-friendly brewery serves a rotating selection of beers spanning a variety of flavor profiles.

Five Dimes Brewery | 247 Westwood Avenue, Westwood

Nestled in Westwood, New Jersey, Five Dimes Brewery is a craft brewery with a rooftop. The outdoor rooftop is also pet-friendly, so four-legged friends can join in on the fun. Five Dimes Brewery also has a BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) policy, and customers are welcome to order from a variety of local restaurants in the area.

Ghost Hawk Brewing Company | 321 River Road #6, Clifton

Ghost Hawk Brewing Company opened in 2019 and bills itself as Passaic County’s first full-production brewery since Prohibition. Its beers are brewed on-site and range from traditional lagers and IPAs to stouts, Belgian-style beers, saisons, + more. The industrial-style taproom is complemented by outdoor tables and seating when the weather allows.

Montclair Brewery | 101 Walnut Street, Montclair

Husband-and-wife owners Denise Ford Sawadogo and Leopold “Leo” Sawadogo turned a passion for brewing into Montclair Brewery, which opened its taproom in 2018. The brewery serves a rotating variety of craft beers, including brews influenced by African and Caribbean flavors. Outdoor seating is available weather permitting and includes heaters + fire pits. Guests can bring their own food, and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

NJ Beer Co. | 4201 Tonnelle Avenue, North Bergen

New Jersey Beer Co. started by brewing just three delicious year-round beers — it produces a variety of unique and seasonal beers all year round. From the Strawberry Lemonade Sour to Peanut Butter and Chocolate Porter, there is a brew for everyone on this menu.

This microbrewery is located in the heart of Woodbridge and serves house-brewed beers alongside American fare like ribs and burgers. Outdoor options include a patio and rooftop lounge overlooking Woodbridge, giving guests multiple ways to enjoy a brew outside.
