Looking for recipes with tahini? These 30 recipes use tahini in countless ways, from desserts to main dishes. You're sure to find something you'll love!

For me, tahini was never a trendy ingredient. It was something we always used, especially for hummus, and I still have a jar somewhere in the kitchen. I use it so often that I'm usually scraping the bottom of a jar while I remember to buy another one. These tahini recipes are examples of all the ways I've used it over the years, far beyond hummus.

35 of the best recipes with tahini

I usually use tahini mostly in savory recipes, especially in dressings, sauces, and dips, but lately I've also been loving using it in baking. It has that slightly bitter, nutty flavor that I really enjoy with chocolate and any dessert. So the tahini recipes you'll find here are quite varied, in a good way: salads, sauces, cookies, brownies, and many more.

Tips for preparing recipes with tahini

Stir well. Sometimes tahini can separate in the jar, so be sure to stir it well before using to ensure the sesame oil and paste are completely blended.

Adjust the consistency. Depending on the recipe, you may need to adjust the consistency of the tahini by adding more water or oil to thin it out.

Use it as a condiment. Tahini can be used to add a sesame flavor to dishes, for example, by sprinkling it over roasted vegetables or mixing it with lemon and garlic as a sauce for grilled meats.

Proper storage. Tahini should be stored in a cool, dry place and, if stored properly, can last up to six months. It can also be refrigerated to extend its shelf life.

How to preserve leftovers

Let it cool. Make sure to let any hot recipe cool to room temperature before storing it.

Label everything with the name and date. Keep track of leftovers so you know how long you have to enjoy them or throw them away if necessary.

Use plastic containers or freezer bags. Keep your food fresh by storing it in airtight containers.

Keep or throw away? If you have perishable foods (like meat or dairy), be sure to store them in the refrigerator. If they've been out of the refrigerator for more than 4 hours, it's probably best to throw them away.

Can I use tahini as a substitute for other ingredients?

Tahini can be used as a substitute for ingredients like mayonnaise, sour cream, or even peanut butter in some recipes, but keep in mind that it has a distinctive flavor that may not work well in all recipes.

What is tahini made of?

Tahini is made from toasted and ground sesame seeds, mixed with oil into a smooth paste. The traditional method uses hulled sesame seeds, but whole sesame seeds can also be used for a slightly bitter and nutty flavor.

What is the best way to preserve tahini?

Tahini should be stored in a cool, dry place and can last up to six months if stored properly. It can also be refrigerated to extend its shelf life. Like other seed and nut butters, it thickens as it cools, so I recommend letting it come to room temperature before using it in recipes.

What should I look for when buying tahini in the store?

Look for tahini made with hulled sesame seeds for a milder flavor or with whole sesame seeds for a more intense flavor, which may have a slightly bitter aftertaste. Check the ingredient label to ensure the tahini contains only sesame seeds and no additives, sweeteners, or thickeners.
