This North County coastal village stretching 39 square miles is steadily building its reputation as a dining destination, boasting a mix of establishments that includes a Michelin-starred restaurant and family-friendly, low-key spots. With many notable restaurants looking to Carlsbad for expansion, State Street and La Costa have become hubs for dining, where visitors and locals can dive into French, Mexican, Thai, and Japanese cuisine and find pizzerias, bakeries, butcheries, and more that are worth a visit. This update adds hot new Alta California restaurant Nómada; Beach Plum Kitchen leaves the list for now.

Ember & Rye

James Beard Award semifinalist Jonathan Bautista (Kingfisher, the Fishery) helms this steakhouse and seafood restaurant at the Park Hyatt Aviara. Ember & Rye comes from celebrity chef Richard Blais, who also owns California English in San Diego and a number of restaurants across the country. Here, Blais often collaborates with Bautista on grilling demonstrations followed by standout family-style meals. Longtime favorites include the beef rib chop “Storm Breaker Cut” and Epic Snack Tower, along with the iconic Smoking Ember cocktail topped with a photo-worthy bubble. In addition, try the squash blossoms stuffed with shrimp, coconut shrimp served with a gooseberry sweet and sour sauce, or the vegan Ember roasted cabbage with ginger and lemon verbena.

Nómada

Nómada brings a bright addition to Carlsbad’s flourishing dining scene. The personal menu highlights chef Alex Carballo’s Sinaloense heritage and adventures in Mexico with live-fire cooking, along with an emphasis on local seafood, seen in dishes such as charred octopus and wood-fired oysters. The raw bar’s supple tortillas get made on site; a duck mole taco trio will satisfy the table. Ask staff to chat about the cocktails like the Ranchero Paloma with fresh twists like cinnamon and traditional ingredients, or the non-alcoholic chicha morada from Peru.

Corner Pizza

Corner Pizza is quickly becoming a North County staple with locations in Carlsbad’s Bressi Ranch neighborhood, south Oceanside, and the Leucadia community in Encinitas. Here, find massive, floppy New York-style pizzas, made with whole ingredients and high-quality cheeses, in iterations like the Killer Bee with soppressata, pepperoni, and chili honey and the Mushroom Queen with seasonal mushrooms, lemony arugula, and truffle oil. The gluten-free set has access to equally satisfying whole pies as well. On the non-pizza side, the raw bar and hefty salads offer diversity you don’t find in most pizzerias.

Prager Brothers Artisan Breads

Helmed by brothers Clinton and Louie Prager, this standout bakery produces its artisan bread at this Carlsbad hub, distributing its baked goods to outposts in Encinitas and Hillcrest as well as farmers’ markets and grocery stores in the area. While their country and multigrain loaves are available daily, other specialties like bauernbrot and raisin walnut can be found on certain days. The Carlsbad location is the only place where customers can place online orders, which requires a three-day notice. Last year, they also started serving pizzas to be enjoyed in the outdoor seating area.

Little Victory

From the same husband-and-wife team behind Encinitas’s popular Little Victory Wine Market, comes a new wine bar destination in Carlsbad. Little Victory Wine Bar, perched on Oak Avenue in Carlsbad’s booming dining scene, brings the same concerted attention to detail to its food menu as it does its wine list: Find snacks like tinned fish (served with hot sauce and baguette), beef tartare, and crudo alongside more formidable plates like Parmesan-flecked risotto and a pan-seared pork chop with spring peas and mushrooms. Wines include jammy Gamay and skin contact options like a 2022 Viognier.

Cafe Topes

This all-day cafe has become an easy weekend choice for locals and travelers in Carlsbad. Coffee drinks like the Hawaiian Express with Ghirardelli chocolate and coconut milk or the lavender mocha kick the morning off properly, while breakfast plates offer a crowd-pleasing variety. Eggs Benedict, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, and scrambles all make the menu, while sweeter, griddled things like French toast and pancakes have a section, too. Lunch favorites include the roasted garlic burger, “crack salad” with tri-tip, and grilled or battered fish tacos. Don’t leave without ordering “Mom’s famous cinny roll” a cinnamon roll heaped with icing that can be made “dirty” (given an extra extravagant layer of frosting) for $2 more.

Same Same

The fun-loving Asian fusion restaurant in the Village Faire Shopping Center features diverse plates and a robust cocktail menu of drinks like the Holy Shitshow (tequila, blistered shishito, Aperol mist) and a dozen beers and cocktails on tap, all in a fun, neon-lit setting. Menu highlights include wonton samosas, pizzas, Thai chicken wings, soul-warming khao soi noodle soup, earthy panang curry, and grilled New York steak with a Thai chili dipping sauce.

Himalayan Sherpa Cuisine

This Himalayan restaurant on Carlsbad Village Drive features flavorful dishes such as juicy lamb momos (dumplings), yak meat dishes, and Sherpa bread. Weekday lunch specials are well-priced plates featuring two dishes from a list that includes chicken tikka masala, saag aloo, and coconut curry served alongside rice, naan, and lentil soup.

Blue Ocean Robata and Sushi Bar

When Blue Ocean first opened in 2014, the Japanese restaurant brought a dose of high design to the neighborhood and a welcome infusion of Asian cuisine. It’s since spawned another location in La Jolla in a joint venture with Harumama, and a third location recently opened in Westfield UTC Mall. The Carlsbad branch is unique for its Japanese robata grill, which turns out skewers of pork belly, wagyu meatballs, baby octopus, and asparagus with bacon, available only after 4 p.m.

Cottages on Roosevelt

Located between Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue, this new coastal collective is comprised of a cluster of quaint cottages nestled around a communal, dog- and kid-friendly outdoor space. Its variety of food and drinks includes outposts of Revolution Roasters coffee and Stella Jean’s Ice Cream as well as the Plot Express, a fast-casual offshoot of popular vegan spot the Plot, which serves an eclectic global menu made with produce from its own Oceanside garden.

Campfire

The family-friendly restaurant boosted the Carlsbad dining scene when it first opened in 2016, where it was recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2019. Led by executive chef Eric Bost (also of Jeune et Jolie), the playful menu offers fire-forward dishes categorized in sections labeled Trailhead, Kindling, the Fire, and Trail’s End. Must-try dishes include quail with tamarind, Oaxacan-spiced chicken, and a deconstructed, make-your-own s’mores dessert.

Nick’s on State

With several locations in Los Angeles and Orange County, the Carlsbad outpost of Nick’s shines as a casual place to find staples like large, filling salads and burgers alongside favorites like the “bistro plate” with petite filet mignon. Crowd-pleasing drinks at this always-busy spot include the bright Mi Guayaba with aperol, tequila, and guava, as well as the earthier Lions Tails with rye whiskey, Sorel liqueur, cinnamon, lime.

Jeune et Jolie

One of the select handful of restaurants in San Diego to earn a Michelin star, this restaurant is a bona fide destination in Carlsbad. Helmed by executive chef Eric Bost, the modern and elegant French table showcases seafood and seasonal vegetable dishes through a Southern California lens. Choose from a four-course tasting menu served in the dining room or on the lovely patio or order a la carte plates at the bar, where you can also indulge in excellent cocktails or absinthe from a custom fountain.

Wildland

Wildland, a new all-day restaurant, bar, and bakery from the same team behind Jeune et Jolie and Campfire in Carlsbad, has already firmed itself as a community anchor. A Tokyo-style standing bar bisects the sprawling, 8,000-square-foot dining room; behind it, a coffee counter buzzes with activity at all hours. Dinner plates range from a half rotisserie chicken with pickled vegetables, salad, toum, and hummus to pizzas, pastas, and a hefty, crispy-edged porchetta served over polenta with a Meyer lemon gremolata. Stop by in the mornings for hot or cold espresso drinks and compelling breakfast plates like the pizza sandwich, a folded pizza stuffed with a runny egg and mortadella.

Lilo

San Diego’s foray into the fine dining scene reached a new level when Lilo opened in Carlsbad in April. The ambitious restaurant from chef Eric Bost and John Resnick, tucked behind their all-day restaurant, Wildland, serves a 12-course tasting menu. With 22 diners seated around an open kitchen, meals start with littleneck clam alongside Buddha’s hand and tomatillo granita before dishes like a Kaluga caviar tartellette and a 40-day-aged rib-eye come out. Pair the meal with wine and cocktails from wine director Savannah Riedler (previously of Saison in San Francisco) and beverage director Andrew Cordero (who manages the other three Bost-Resnick restaurants).

Beshock Ramen and Sake Bar

This ramen shop got its start in Nagoya, Japan, before branching out to East Village and then Carlsbad. Also known as umami ramen, the Nagoya-style tonkotsu ramen with shio broth, dried bamboo, and pork belly cha shu is a favorite while its sushi rolls feature real snow crab, not imitation crab sticks. Its owners, who also run Sushi Gaga, Asa Bakery, and Bar Kamon, are offering drinks like the Senzoku Driver, a vibrant mocktail.

Tasty Noodle House

Part of a popular Chinese food chain with several locations in the Los Angeles area and one in the Convoy District, this Shanghainese restaurant established an outpost at the Shoppes at Carlsbad. Customer favorite dishes include grilled pork buns, crispy fish fillets with seaweed, and beef fillets with spicy sauce. The minimalist-chic dining room makes this space easy for lunch or dinner with a group.
