Bonnie’s Fun Cantonese Brunch Returns to Brooklyn for One Day Only
Cantonese American restaurant Bonnie’s is bringing back its famous brunch for one day only later this March. The brunch takes place on Sunday, March 30 at 10 a.m. Tickets are $70. Reservations will be released for the public on Friday, March 7 at noon.
Expect owner and chef Calvin Eng’s fun approach to Chinese American mid-morning dishes through a prix-fixe, family-style menu. The dishes come from the restaurant’s forthcoming cookbook Salt Sugar MSG, which means there will be Golden Lava French Toast and hash browns. The ticket comes with a copy of the book (which publishes on March 18) and a T-shirt.
Owner and chef Calvin Eng opened the restaurant in late 2021, and initially offered weekend brunch in early 2022, but he and the team decided to nix the service just after eight weeks because “it was a logistical nightmare,” he told Eater at the time.
Top seafood supplier opens a restaurant in a Manhattan food hall
New York City seafood supplier Aqua Best is getting back into the restaurant game. The Southeast Asian Essex Pearl will debut inside James Beard’s Market 57 on Pier 57 at 25 11th Avenue on Friday, March 21. Aqua originally opened Essex Pearl as part of the Market Line food hall in the Lower East Side in 2019. It closed down completely in March 2024.
Tribeca plaza gets not one, but two new food vendors
Tribeca’s Bogardus Plaza is getting a new restaurant kiosk run by two Manhattan food vendors: Portuguese bakery Joey Bats Cafe and Dominican restaurant El Sazón R.D. Joey Bats is known for its very popular pastéis de nata, which are Portuguese egg tarts. It operates three locations elsewhere in Manhattan. El Sazón’s Dominican menu includes the popular smash burgers with fried cheese and a chimi aioli and meats with rice and beans. The plaza’s previous restaurant, Tribeca Plate, closed in late 2024. The food kiosk is aiming to open sometime in March pending the acceptance of its beer and wine permit.
