Fluffy pancakes arrive in Rome: where to eat these “wavy” Japanese treats

Fluffy pancakes are coming to Rome: going viral on social media, these jiggly Japanese treats are about to invade the capital. There are already two places where you can try them.

They've gone viral on social media and are known as fluffy pancakes, or, more simply, Japanese pancakes. They need little introduction, having become a veritable fad in recent years. Their defining characteristic? The texture of the batter, which makes them particularly fluffy—so much so that they're nicknamed "little clouds"—and produces a wavy motion.

We've seen them on TikTok, covered in various sauces, and now they're coming to Rome, with dedicated openings. But where and when?

Where to eat fluffy pancakes in Rome

Let's start with someone who's been in Rome for a while, Akira Yoshida (the creator of Ramen Bar Akira, with several locations in the capital and around Italy). Among his Japanese cuisine establishments, one couldn't miss out on fluffy pancakes. It's called Tokyo Pancake and opened on May 25th at Via in Arcione 71, a stone's throw from the Trevi Fountain, in a space formerly occupied by Ramen Akira. Four pancake variations are available: strawberry and cream; strawberry, azuki, cream, matcha; banana and chocolate; and berries and cream. Available in single portions (€6) and double portions (€9.80). The recipe is apparently top secret (although we know the batter is egg-based) and the preparation time is quite long. There's also branded packaging (and even a bag) to take the pancakes away.

The other fluffy pancake opening is under the PanFuwa brand, already in Milan on Via Vetere and now opening again in Rome, they announced on their social media channels. The location opens on June 1st at Via Pompeo Magno 102. Again, they specify that preparation times are not short, "about 10-15 minutes," as stated on the website, so don't wait to be served immediately: the fluffy pancakes are made to order, but the experience will be one of "fluffy happiness," as the slogan says. PanFuwa offers them in both sweet and savory versions: from the classic pancake topping, with butter, powdered sugar, cream, and maple syrup, to anko (azuki bean jam), pistachio, tiramisu, and savory variations, such as mortadella and burrata or cherry tomatoes, stracciatella, and basil pesto.
