Apple recipes: The best ideas from sweet to savory

Apples are primarily in season in late summer and autumn: depending on the variety, the harvest begins in August, and the apple season reaches its peak in September and October. Many locally grown storage apples are then available well into winter.

In the kitchen, apples can do far more than just cakes and desserts: their fruity acidity pairs well with robust flavors of duck, bacon, or cheese, as well as with fish and vegetables. This is demonstrated by savory apple recipes such as Coq au Cidre with roasted apples, duck breast with apple and romaine lettuce salad, or pretzels with cheese, bacon, and apple compote.

The apple season is made sweet with classics and new ideas such as South Tyrolean apple strudel, caramel apple brownies or Kaiserschmarrn with cranberry apple compote.
