The key ingredient is cranberry juice cocktail, which shouldn't be confused with pure cranberry juice. It's sweeter and lighter in color, giving the Cosmopolitan its pink hue. Too much of it will give the color a reddish tint and overpower the other flavors; too little will make the drink less visually appealing. You can start with 15 ml, gradually adjusting the amount until you achieve the desired color and flavor.

The method matters, too. A cosmopolitan is shaken, not stirred. Shaking cools the drink evenly and aerates it, resulting in a smoother texture and a slightly frothy appearance that enhances the color to an almost ethereal, hazy pink. Stirring is more appropriate for martinis, which are different drinks altogether.

The color also depends on the ingredients and their proportions. Cranberry juice provides the reddish hue that turns pink when mixed with clear spirits and lime juice. More lime will make the pink brighter; more cranberry, a deeper and more intense pink. The classic formula includes vodka, Cointreau triple sec, lime juice, and cranberry juice.

For variations, pomegranate juice creates a darker, more intense pink and a slightly acidic note. Grand Marnier, instead of Cointreau, gives a warmer orange hue, and a splash of raspberry liqueur intensifies the fruity flavor without upsetting the balance.

Presentation matters, too. A chilled martini glass enhances the drink and its color, and a lime wedge or twist adds a touch of green contrast, while a frosted glass makes the pink appear even more vibrant.
