Make Japanese teriyaki sauce quickly and easily (in less than 5 minutes!)
Chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki: all delicious dishes. And take three guesses what makes these dishes so tasty… Making that teriyaki sauce yourself is much faster than buying it ready-made, and it won't surprise you that it tastes even better than the bottled version.
Teriyaki sauce is irresistible. The sauce – which is also used as a marinade – originates from Japanese cuisine. Consequently, it contains three key flavorings found in every kitchen cupboard in Japan: soy sauce, sake, and mirin. If you briefly simmer these three ingredients with a pinch of sugar, you are left with a heavenly sauce that pairs well with fish, meat, and vegetables.
A classic teriyaki recipe is, for example, chicken teriyaki, but salmon teriyaki has also become an indispensable part of our weekly menus. And there are many more possibilities. How about our donburi (rice bowl) with sticky teriyaki mushrooms, for instance? Or mashed potatoes with fried teriyaki Brussels sprouts?
Making teriyaki sauce: recipe
- Mix the soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar in a large bowl and stir well.
- Heat this mix in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
- Check after a few minutes if the sauce has the desired taste.
You can serve this sauce as is, or use it as a marinade for meat, fish, or poultry. Enjoy!
