New world wine map reveals: Bairrada vineyards are 4.4°C warmer than Champagne

The recently released World Winery Map maps 80 wine producers and 12,942 vineyards in the Bairrada region. According to data from the World Winery Map, the vineyards in Bairrada are at an average altitude of 80 meters and are 4.4°C warmer during the growing season than those in Champagne.

The project is the most comprehensive interactive database on the world's viticultural terroir, mapping 4,303,693 vineyards and 104,330 wine producers in 90 countries. For each vineyard on the map, it is possible to consult very specific geospatial data, including altitude, solar radiation and slope, along with essential viticultural indicators such as soil composition, the Huglin index and average temperatures during the growing season.

“For each plot, we extracted the exact coordinates and calculated the altitude, slope, and exposure using the Copernicus GLO-30 terrain model, and then overlaid the climate data on that basis,” said Matija Gavrilović, founder of the World Winery Map. “In the larger plots, we used up to 16 measurement points, which is why the altitude is presented as a precise range and not as a single number. We also calculated slope, precipitation, wind, soil type, and geology whenever data was available.”

The vineyard plots come from 38 independent sources. Twenty-two of them are official state records. The official boundaries for Portugal are sourced from the IGP Specifications published by the IVV (Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho), which defines 14 wine-growing areas for Portugal. It is possible to select any region to consult essential data, view boundaries, check average rainfall and altitude, and analyze viticultural data such as the Winkler index. The World Winery Map is already in dialogue with official entities from various countries, with the aim of keeping the map as accurate as possible.

The map traces 98,719 specific boundaries of wine regions, ranging from vast macro-regions to individual wine-growing locations with their own names. This total includes 2,815 official wine regions, sub-regions, and designations of origin, alongside 95,904 wine-growing locations with their own names. The platform was designed specifically for both industry professionals and wine tourists. An integrated geolocation system allows you to instantly find nearby wine producers and get directions to their property, anywhere in the world.

Producers in the Bairrada region are invited to claim their producer profiles on the platform free of charge. By managing their pages, producers can update tasting room hours, confirm visiting policies, claim their specific vineyard plots, and update data on the grape varieties planted, actively participating in maintaining the most accurate and detailed wine map in the world.
