This British Virgin Islands Retreat Has a Rum Bar, Its Own Brewery and a Nov. 1 Reopening

The boat pulls into the bay, you step ashore, and lunch suddenly seems like the most important appointment of the day. That’s how it goes at Cooper Island Beach Club. We’ve visited countless times, and we love the ease of it: the beach beside the restaurant, the boats in the water and the sense that you can give this little stretch of island your entire afternoon.

Now Cooper Island Beach Club is preparing to welcome visitors again. The family-owned property says it will reopen for the season on Nov. 1, 2026, following its annual closure.

For sailors moving through the British Virgin Islands, Cooper Island is an especially appealing place to come ashore. You can arrive for a meal, head into the water, try a rum you haven’t had before and return to the boat at your own pace. But it’s just as compelling as the destination itself, with eight beachfront rooms for travelers who want to stay after the day’s visitors have left.

A Beach You’ll Want to Linger On Cooper Island Beach Club sits on the island’s sandy northwest shore, facing the Sir Francis Drake Channel. The restaurant is right by the water, which means a swim can lead straight into lunch, and lunch can stretch into another swim. On a sailing itinerary full of beautiful anchorages, it’s the chance to spend real time ashore that makes this stop memorable.

We keep coming back for that unhurried rhythm. There’s plenty to enjoy, but you never feel obliged to rush from one activity to the next. Take a table, look out toward the channel and let the afternoon decide what happens after lunch.

The restaurant serves seafood and dishes inspired by local and international flavors. There’s also the Coffee Box for coffee, pastries and lighter bites earlier in the day. These are welcome options on an island where arriving by boat is part of the experience: you can come ashore for breakfast, make a long stop at lunchtime or settle in for the evening.

Come for the Beach, Stay for the Rum Bar.

The Rum Bar is one of the reasons we love Cooper Island. It has one of the larger rum selections in the Virgin Islands, giving you an opportunity to explore bottles from across the Caribbean while looking out over the water. It feels entirely at home here. This is a place where a good pour deserves time and conversation.

And rum isn’t the only drink with an island connection. Cooper Island Beach Club has its own solar-powered microbrewery, producing beer on site. Between the Rum Bar, the brewery and the beachfront restaurant, a stop that began with a swim can become the highlight of the day.

There are other ways to spend time here, too. Guests can kayak, paddleboard and snorkel, while Sail Caribbean Divers operates a dive shop on the island. Or you can simply remain on the sand. Cooper Island doesn’t demand a full itinerary to make the visit worthwhile.

The Beach Club’s eight guest rooms sit among palms and tropical gardens, with views across the channel. They’re open, airy spaces with private balconies, cooled by fans and sea breezes rather than air conditioning. That small number of rooms gives an overnight stay a different character from an afternoon boat stop.

Stay, and you get more time with the island: a quiet morning by the water, breakfast without watching the clock and an evening after the day’s sailing traffic has eased. If you’ve only ever come to Cooper Island for lunch, it’s easy to see why you might want another day.

We’ve followed the Beach Club through earlier chapters, including its reopening after the 2017 hurricanes. Its return this November is a welcome marker of the new BVI season. We already know where we’d like to stop.
