La Grande Table du Plaza Athénée has reopened under a new name months after Jean Imbert's departure and the abuse accusations now attached to him, in the same season a thirteen-year-old Paris institution, La Dame de Pic, closed for good.
The name went first.
Jean Imbert left the Plaza Athénée in April. By September, the sign above the entrance on Avenue Montaigne read something else entirely, La Grande Table du Plaza Athénée, not the name the address had carried under him. The hotel had made its real decision months earlier, quietly, and let the building announce it later.
His exit had been building the way pressure builds before rock moves, invisible along a fault line until the ground gives all at once. He now faces accusations of physical violence and psychological abuse, serious enough that a rebrand this complete reads less like marketing than distancing. A slow earthquake, felt for months before anyone called it one.
Elsewhere in the city, a second fracture opened the same year. La Dame de Pic, the one-star room on the rue du Louvre that Anne-Sophie Pic had run for thirteen years, closed for good. Different address, different cause, same tremor running under the grandest dining rooms in Paris.
Both rooms were built to look permanent, the kind of address a young cook spends a decade trying to reach and an older one spends a decade trying to keep. Both changed hands within months of each other. A single hotel group did not cause that. It only had to live through it.
Addresses like these rarely survive two identity changes in a single career. Most do not survive one.
Imbert spent close to a decade building a name that a grand hotel would stake its main dining room on, the kind of name a hotel group repeats in its own marketing until the two become difficult to separate. Removing it from the building took a single season, a new name painted over the old one before most regulars had read why. What happens to it now depends on accusations he did not choose to have attached to it.
A year from now, the cost will not be visible in the signage on Avenue Montaigne. It will be visible in whether any kitchen of that size offers him a room like that one again, and in how long the fault line he is standing on keeps moving under him. That is the only ledger that matters.
