Baristart Has New Hojicha And Strawberry Kakigori

NGL, Singapore has been incredibly warm of late, in spite of the occasional showers.

If you work in the Tanjong Pagar area, or are headed to Sentosa anytime, pop over to Baristart Coffee for their latest menu item: kakigori. There are two of these Japanese shaved ice desserts, only sold at their Tras Street and Sentosa outlets for now.

We don’t know if it’ll be available at their upcoming Wisma Atria store, but will update this post if it is. It’s not clear if these kakigori are permanent items on the Baristart Coffee menu, so hurry down to enjoy them soon!

The first of these kakigori is Hojicha Genmai Kakigori ($12.80++), which arrives at the table as a moss-green mountain of shaved ice. Each of these is prepared to order, and loaded with house-made syrups and more.

While it bears similarity to the popular Korean bingsu, kakigori is not prepared with milk ice, but pure ice. Rather than enter the shaved ice dessert fray with a run-of-the-mill matcha offering, Baristart has gone with the roasted green tea and brown rice tea route—you’ll taste the toasty notes of these in the sweet dessert. Dig into the kakigori, and you’ll find kinako mochi balls, rice crackers, Hokkaido azuki, hojicha mousse, and wobbly hojicha pudding within!

For a fruity treat, go instead for Strawberry Cheesecake Kakigori ($12.80++), where the mountain of shaved ice is drenched in house-made strawberry syrup, and topped with a dollop of cream cheese on a cookie. Hidden inside this kakigori are fresh strawberry chunks, which lend a tart sweetness to the sugary treat.
