If you choose the ideal way to cook a particular cut of meat, it will look spectacular on its own. However, a spoonful of gravy can perfectly complement the meal, adding juiciness to lean cuts and flavor to side dishes. There are many packaged options on the market, but it's also a condiment you can easily make at home. You only need two basic pantry staples: soy sauce and butter, to create a rich and flavorful sauce worthy of top-quality meat.

Making this steak sauce is very simple. Just melt a stick of butter (preferably unsalted) in a pan until it's lightly browned, then stir in a tablespoon of soy sauce off the heat. Many cooks also add a squeeze of lemon juice for a fresher touch. You can use the sauce right away or store it in a clean, airtight container (like a canning jar) for up to four days.

Browned butter soy sauce is quite thin, so it's best drizzled over meat rather than added directly to bites. However, thanks to its delicious combination of umami and fat, you'll also want to use it with chicken, potatoes, and vegetable side dishes; many dishes benefit from this simple yet effective sauce.

Prepare a soy sauce with browned butter and other ingredients.

Browned butter and soy sauce make a reliable sauce base, ready for a wide variety of additional flavors. Add other ingredients and you'll have a more complex steak accompaniment. Start with umami, a flavor that effectively enhances beef. You can add a light saltiness with miso, a reliable partner for soy sauce, or intensify the flavors of fermented soybeans with doenjang. Alternatively, opt for the more acidic Worcestershire sauce, which you can also use as a steak marinade, or even grate some Parmesan cheese over it.

Next, consider adding a touch of sweetness; sugar will give the sauce a complex caramel flavor. A drizzle of honey adds a delicate floral note, while brown sugar adds a richer flavor with hints of molasses. Looking for something more aromatic? A splash of maple syrup pairs perfectly with the nutty flavor of browned butter.

With sweet and savory flavors, complete the sauce with a touch of spice. Sprinkle in chili flakes for balanced heat, or use cayenne for a more intense flavor. You can also add garlic for a strong, distinctive taste. Feel free to combine any aromatics you prefer; a wide variety of ingredients will look wonderful in this buttery base.
