Some of the earliest uses of the phrase "everyone's a critic" date back to a pre-internet era, when even the most vocal complainer had no more reach than a telephone wire. Today, however, a review can mean very different things depending on who you ask.
When a review isn't intended to inform, it shows: anything too personal, inaccurate, or clearly biased is hard to believe. Amateur reviews on open platforms are neither edited nor verified, and their moderation is arbitrary. Many focus on perceived offenses, such as complaining that a restaurant didn't provide candles for a birthday cake brought from outside, something that doesn't affect the experience. Unretouched photos, however, can be helpful.
Professional criticism has its pitfalls. A salary and a title don't prevent insults, and a review that focuses on a particular waiter's tone on a busy night is detrimental to the reader. Other qualities, such as the food, drinks, and atmosphere, deserve attention.
External influence also appears in formal criticism, primarily through public relations contacts, the hope of future favors such as facilitating bookings, or personal connections. Until this is revealed, the reader has no access to this information.
To read quality reviews, look for publications with clearly defined ethical policies and authors with a clear commitment to criticism. And choose someone whose opinion you like: just like with food, there's no accounting for taste.
