Caorle beyond the sea: five sweet treats to discover while pedaling inland
Caorle (Ve) can be "pedaled" and tasted. This is what I discovered during a three-day bike ride with an Italian Wine Tour, cycling through the lagoon, vineyards, countryside, waterways, and wineries that preserve the knowledge and production of this enchanting, "liquid" land.
Caorle isn't just about the sea; just a few kilometers from the shore you'll encounter a surprising landscape, made up of agriculture, wine, honey, fishing, and a cuisine that still speaks of its roots. I, it goes without saying, looked at it through the eyes of the Lady in Sweet, and these are the five sweet treats that won me over.
Caramelized fig carpaccio from the Picnic restaurant
A real surprise: thinly sliced figs, served with banana and parsley ice cream and chocolate chips. A unique dessert, where sweet, aromatic, crunchy, and cold meet in a surprising bite.
Marchesan Beekeeping Honey
Talk about going beyond. Here I learned that even honey can tell the story of a region, because the hives follow the blooms and offer acacia, lime, chestnut, honeydew, rapeseed, sunflower, and wildflower honey. They change color, scent, and flavor, drawing a small map of Caorloff's biodiversity. My favorite? Rapeseed.
La Frassina biscuits
I arrived for the wine, Lison DOCG in the lead, and left with one certainty: you should never underestimate shortcrust pastry. The artisanal biscuits made by the Eden restaurant for La Frassina, served at the end of the meal on a table set under the estate's portico with a marvelous view of the fields, are a true gem, crumbly and fragrant.
Polenta Cake at the Fish Festival
At the grand celebration organized by the Caorle Sailors and Fishermen's Association, where maritime tradition becomes a popular celebration with lights and music, I discovered this traditional local dessert. Sponge cake, Chantilly cream, chocolate cream, and a crumb topping reminiscent of polenta in shape. A sweet treat reminiscent of memories, enjoyed in a festive and cheerful atmosphere that brings joy to your soul.
The warm-hearted cake from Enoteca Enos
Here, I admit, the Lady in Sweet has found her sweet spot. A wide variety of desserts, including tiramisu, millefeuille, shortbread biscuits with custard, and a chocolate tart that hides, beneath a barely crunchy crust, a warm, melt-in-the-mouth center. My favorite, without hesitation.
Caorle, a land to discover beyond the beach
Three days, many kilometers, and one conviction: to truly get to know Caorle, you have to leave the beach, hop on a bike, and let yourself be guided by the landscape and, more than once, by the scent of a dessert that, unexpectedly, has a lot to say here.
