Faro Cafè's resistance in Rome, lemon curd, and a call to support quality venues
We're publishing a post from one of Rome's best specialty cafes, Farò Caffè. Sometimes a few heartfelt and intelligent words are enough to capture the dramatic situation.
It's been raining for five days and will continue to rain until the end of the month. There's a global pandemic that shows no sign of abating. We don't have a decent political class. Compensation isn't helping, some aren't getting it at all. Mental fatigue is immense, and many colleagues are exhausted. The intelligent are demoralized, and so are the young. The arrogant are advancing, the elderly aren't giving up. Cynical capitalism has come to devour itself, but we have no alternative system. There's ever-increasing civil confusion and ideological division. Social media is exacerbating the situation, and in the sea of opinions, we too are getting lost.
It's becoming difficult to adapt to the current situation without guidance and strong points of authority. We should be talking about aid, economic development, and revising restaurant contracts (which today are tied to forms of tourism or commerce, but we're in the restaurant business; we don't have two clerks and a hundred display cases! And to give a waiter a proper trial run, we have to give him a monthly contract). Yet we find ourselves in this stagnant and repugnant way of doing politics, without plans, without foresight, without the ability to listen to those who experience certain choices firsthand.
It's in these moments that we throw ourselves headlong into everything else, into research, into ideas, into that tomorrow so hard to glimpse today, trying to distract ourselves by creating. Only a lemon curd can save us, a sour drink to degrease our ignorance, a sweet meringue to rebuild a different future.
