When choosing a drink, some people gravitate towards one option or another. Perhaps you consider yourself a beer drinker or a cocktail lover, but you avoid crossing that line. The good news is that you don't always have to choose. In fact, beer cocktails can be a great way to find a middle ground and enjoy the best of both worlds.

With the resurgence in popularity of the classic espresso martini, now might be a good time to explore new options. Believe it or not, the ingredient that can take your caffeinated cocktail to the next level is actually a beer: specifically, Guinness Draught.

If you need help convincing your beer-only or cocktail-loving friends that this is a good idea, you can turn to an expert. Zack Berger, a Guinness brand advisor, explains why this combination is perfect. When adding it to your espresso martini recipe, he describes what the beer brings to the cocktail, saying that Guinness "will give it body and creaminess, while preventing the cocktail from being too sweet." That's a good reason to raise a glass to this delicious beer cocktail, and it's incredibly easy to make!

How to prepare an espresso martini with Guinness

While a classic espresso martini is a combination of vodka, coffee liqueur, and espresso (perhaps with a little simple syrup or sugar), this variation reduces the amount of vodka to accommodate the beer, which is incorporated as a floating layer on top of the drink. If you've ever wondered what stout beer is and how it's drunk, you'll also know that Guinness Draught has smaller bubbles than many beers, giving it a creamier mouthfeel. This layering method creates a creamy head as a result.

Guinness is also ideal for an espresso martini thanks to its roasted coffee notes, complemented by chocolatey and bittersweet nuances. When combined with a coffee liqueur and this dry spirit, it achieves the perfect balance, offering an unmistakable flavor.

Zack Berger also highlights beer's ability to lend its character to a wide range of drinks. "Guinness, as a brand and product, is incredibly versatile," he stated. You might already know this if you're a fan of the perfect Black and Tan, or perhaps this is your first foray into the world of beer cocktails. But the next time you order a martini or decide to make one at home, try this simple touch of Guinness and enjoy how a little beer perfectly complements one of your favorite cocktails.
