What was Chef Rubio doing at the sit-in?
Taken to the police station, Rubio allegedly stated that he had to participate in a demonstration organized by Potere al Popolo against the censorship of Palestinian flags and symbols, to protest an act of censorship he allegedly suffered during his appearance on an Argentine television program. Shortly afterward, some participants attempted to deface the Israeli flag with red. However, the blood in the container, Rubio claimed, was intended for cooking purposes. If tests confirm the contents, the chef could face severe fines.
Who is Chef Rubio?
Born in Frascati in 1982, Gabriele Rubini, after an initial stint as a rugby player, decided to devote himself to cooking (attending Alma). But more than cooking, Rubio found a home on television, where, thanks to Unti e Bisunti, he became known and developed the persona of the anti-chef: a mix of clichés, including criticism of chefs, culinary trends, populism, and stereotypical veracity, which nevertheless allowed him to star in several TV programs on Nove, DMAX, and Food Network. This was until he retired from the small screen, where—he declared shortly thereafter—he no longer felt free to express his opinions.
Since then he has dedicated himself to humanitarian work, despite the controversy, such as the one with Amnesty International, with which he ended his collaboration in 2018 due to some of his statements deemed misogynistic by the organization.
