The best sushi in the Twin Cities

The best sushi in the Twin Cities

The Twin Cities offer excellent quality sushi away from the sea, from traditional takeaways to trendy restaurant omakase menus.

The Twin Cities prove that excellent sushi can be found far from the sea. All the establishments on this list pride themselves on their impeccable fish cuts, meticulously crafted rolls, and extensive menus, each with its own distinct personality. In this update, JK's Table, Momo Sushi, and Midori's Floating World Cafe drop off the list, while Kiku Bistro joins.

Sushi Fix, in the heart of Wayzata, is known for its excellent food without taking itself too seriously. Its menu is extensive, featuring dishes like wagyu with quail egg yolk and caviar or the Emperor Nigiri with tuna. The Wayzata Trojan and Silly Rolls, with four types of fish, add a touch of whimsy. To drink, there's sake-tini or an extensive sake menu.

AMA Sushi, at the intersection of 50th Street and France Avenue, fuses traditional Japanese dishes with comforting Tibetan recipes. Warm, aromatic dishes balance the sushi with fresh, vibrant flavors, and every meal begins with a complimentary miso soup.

Kiku Bistro remains an Uptown landmark despite the recent construction on Hennepin Avenue. Its warm ambiance, with soft lighting and dark wood, makes it ideal for dates, group dinners, or a relaxed sushi meal. It offers classic nigiri and creative rolls, as well as stir-fries, noodles, and grilled dishes. Origami Tiger, meanwhile, fuses Japanese and Thai cuisine, with impeccable makis, beautifully presented sashimi, and aromatic curries. It's one of the few sushi restaurants in the neighborhood open until 1 a.m. on weekends and has a terrace where you can enjoy its makis and nigiris.

Kyatchi has a casual and inviting dining room, with a carefully curated selection of ingredients, pure flavors, and high-quality fish. It follows the guidelines of Monterey Bay Seafood Watch, and that commitment to sustainability is evident in the nigiri, sashimi, and seasonal specialties. The Summer Roll, with sake, bincho (a type of fish), cucumber, avocado, togarashi mayonnaise, lemon, and shiso leaf, is highly recommended. Happy hour, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, is a great time to sample several dishes.

Billy Sushi is quirky and fun, and it's a firm standout in the North Loop. Its long sushi bar is the centerpiece, where you can watch the chefs prepare rolls of salmon, tuna, and jack mackerel. Founder Enkhbileg "Billy" Tserenbat, who launched Sushi Fix as a food truck before opening the Wayzata restaurant, is often in the dining room. It's a dinner-only spot, and reservations are recommended.

Kado no Mise, by chef Shigeyuki Furukawa, is part of a Japanese complex in the North Loop, along with Kaiseki Furukawa, a tribute to the 16th-century tea ceremony, and Gori Gori Peku, a Japanese whisky bar directly across the street. Its name means "corner restaurant," and it offers sushi and seasonal dishes in three tasting menus, priced from $84 to $192 per person. From Wednesday to Sunday, it serves an omakase menu in its 26-seat dining room.
