Stuff olives with vodka for a miniature dirty martini

When it comes to a classic cocktail, nothing is quite as simple and delicious as the dirty martini. Traditionally made with gin or vodka mixed with brined olives and a splash of dry vermouth, the dirty martini is salty yet smooth. However, the best part of the drink often comes at the end, when you taste the olive that's been soaking in the brine. It's such a delightful treat that cookbook author Dan Whalen created a recipe that offers the best of both worlds: vodka-stuffed olives.

Whalen, better known as the creator of the online food site "The Food in my Beard," which specializes in comfort food with a twist, had the brilliant idea of making a miniature dirty martini by stuffing olives with vodka. Similar to how you make Jell-O shots, Whalen first prepared a vodka-based jelly with an extra-firm consistency, knowing that the amount that would fit in the center of each olive would be minimal. He then used two different methods to stuff the olives. First, he tried plugging the holes with blue cheese, both to keep the jelly in place and to add an extra touch of salt. But he got better results by filling a ramekin with olives (hole facing up), pouring the vodka-jelly mixture over them, and letting it set. The result was the perfect miniature dirty martini.

The variations of stuffed olives are endless.

Although Whalen opted for Castelvetrano vodka and olives, there are countless ways to prepare this treat. By following your own martini specifications, with a touch of spice, just the right amount of vermouth, or a specific brand of liqueur (perhaps even an inexpensive vodka that's actually worth buying), you can incorporate those nuances into these bite-sized delights. Pimento-stuffed olives add a hint of spice and sweetness to a spicy martini. Try first mixing the peppers with the gelatin, then spooning the mixture over the olives in a small dish. A few drops of cocktail bitters can also add a bold, zing flavor.

If you're looking for something a little less spicy, spritz versions of the dirty martini are perfect for summer, and any time of year, and offer a fun twist on olive bites. Add a splash of club soda to the jelly mix for a lighter flavor that lowers the alcohol content. Of course, you can always go all out with the heat and create a spicy dirty martini. Similar to a margarita, this take on the classic dirty martini adds chili-flavored salt to the rim of the glass, along with a dash of hot sauce. Why not give the vodka jelly mix a kick by adding a splash of your favorite hot sauce? There are endless possibilities for serving this new favorite at your next party.
