The Riesling harvest in Rhineland-Palatinate is entering its final stages and could be completed by the middle of this week, with very high quality expected for one of the most representative varieties of German vineyards. This was reported by a spokesperson for the South Rhine-Palatinate Farmers and Winegrowers Association in statements collected on Monday, September 21, by the German Press Agency (dpa).

In recent days, harvest crews continued working in areas such as Calmont de Bremm, a hillside known for its steep slope. The final stretch of the harvest comes after a dry period which, according to the spokesperson, has allowed for the harvesting of “very healthy” grapes this year. Based on this, the sector expects a Riesling vintage of exceptional quality.

Riesling occupies a central place in German wine due to its commercial importance and its image both domestically and internationally. The agricultural organization itself noted that this variety produces fresh and fruity white wines that are in demand and that it also beautifully expresses the origin of each vineyard. It is also used in a wide range of styles, from sweet wines to premium wines, and is popularly consumed mixed with sparkling water in Germany.

This evolution matters beyond the harvest of a single region. The final quality and available volume of Riesling in Rhineland-Palatinate can influence winery planning, supply for the domestic market, and exports of a variety that plays a significant role in the German wine industry. If the anticipated high quality is confirmed in the winery, the effect could be felt in prices, product ranges, and distributors' purchasing decisions.

The German Wine Institute, cited by dpa, ranks this harvest among the earliest ever recorded in the country. According to the institute, the grape harvest began earlier this year than ever before. Even so, ripening has not been uniform. The institute explains that there have been significant differences between vineyards due to varying water availability.

This point has been crucial in understanding the harvest schedule. The German Wine Institute notes that the intense drought is slowing the ripening process, meaning some plots have needed more time to reach the optimal harvest time. This unevenness helps explain why, despite the very early start to the season, some areas have extended the harvest until the last days of September.

The summer weather has also had varying effects depending on the grape variety. The German Wine Institute indicates that the dry, hot period, combined with intense solar radiation, has particularly favored red grapes, with Spätburgunder among the best performers. This is further complemented by the good performance of more southerly varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, which are becoming increasingly popular in Germany.

For Riesling producers, the harvest has thus concluded with an unusual combination of a very early picking, healthy grapes, and uneven ripening across the vineyards. The final result will now depend on the work done in the winery and how well the expected quality is confirmed in the wines released to the market in the coming months.
