Mystic, in Halifax harbor, serves signature menus with an Atlantic flavor
In the port of Halifax, the Mystic restaurant offers eight-course tasting menus that explore the gastronomic richness of the Canadian Atlantic.
Mystic is a spectacular glass building that juts out into Halifax Harbour, capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the water, a perfect setting to explore the rich gastronomy of Atlantic Canada. Chef Malcolm Campbell, formerly of Cabot Cape Breton, offers two eight-course tasting menus, both flowing and seasonal, in the main dining room. Diners seated in the Galley, overlooking the open kitchen, enjoy a more personalized experience.
In the signature menus, appetizers precede the Acadian caviar with smoked egg yolk and wild seaweed. This might be followed by lobster ravioli with local saffron or small halibut accompanied by gnocchi, smoked mussels, and pickled wild leek.
The presentation is meticulous, transforming each dish into a visual spectacle, but aesthetics are just the beginning. The harmony of the ingredients is perfect, and the flavors are exquisite.
Sommelier Samuel Melanson suggests pairings based on an extensive cellar of classic wines and some of the region's finest. Among them are the delicate bubbles of the Small Lot Trio Brut from Lightfoot & Wolfville and the Chardonnay Reserve from Blomidon Estate.
The service is impeccable and friendly, with thoughtful yet informal recommendations.
