The beers recommended by Scott Collins of MEATliquor

Restaurateur Scott Collins, founder and CEO of MEATliquor, reviews some of his favorite beers, from lagers to sour beers.

According to Collins, Stiegl Goldbräu is one of his favorite lagers: full-bodied, smooth, and delicate, it's brewed with Alpine spring water and has a pleasant hoppy finish. The brand also makes a highly recommended grapefruit Radler. Collins recalls that Mozart greatly appreciated it in his time.

Tiny Rebels' Little Rebel Cali initially had a more West Coast style. Over the years, they've modernized it: today it's quite hazy, though it retains the bitterness of West Coast IPAs, with plenty of juice, pine, mango, grapefruit, and a tropical touch. Collins recommends it alongside their Clwb Tropicana, another great beer from the same brewery, and mentions Ninkasi's Total Domination IPA from Eugene, Oregon, as a favorite.

Mikkeller is a benchmark in the brewing world for Collins, and everyone follows his lead. His Evergreen is a hazy and juicy Hazy Session IPA, very easy to drink, and excellent for enjoying non-stop.

Brooklyn Bel Air Sour is a beer that's as beloved for its flavor as it is for its name. According to Collins, everything Brooklyn does is great, and Garrett Oliver is the brewery's gift. It's light, sour, dry, and fruity, though it doesn't contain any fruit: its acidity comes from lactobacilli. Since many sour beers aren't always easy to drink, Collins believes this one is perfect for four or five pints, though not before operating heavy machinery.

Northern Monk Northern Star Mocha Porter hails from Leeds, and Collins has admired the brewery's work ever since MEATliquor opened there. He enjoys a dark beer at certain times of the year, and this porter is brewed with coffee from Northern Star Coffee Roasters, also in Leeds: it's rich, smooth, and full-bodied.

Camden Hells in Hibernation is a lager that, according to Collins, deserves its place on the list. Although liking Camden has faded since it was bought by a brewing giant, everything they produce is still excellent. Collins begins with the phrase "Beer is the greatest drink in the world," which he attributes to Jack Nicholson, though he believes Nicholson was wrong: the best beer is lager. It reminds him of sitting in a log cabin, lying on a bed of pine and fir.
