Coconut water is good for much more than hydration and hangover relief. Elle Liu, founder of the fine tea brand THEORÓ, believes coconut water is an excellent base for iced tea. "It transforms iced tea into a richer, smoother, and more nuanced beverage," she told us.

From a chemical standpoint, tea contains catechins, which give it astringency, and caffeine, which adds bitterness. Coconut water gently balances both flavors: its subtle sweetness and high potassium content help soften the tea's more intense notes, explains Liu. Tea also contains amino acids like L-theanine, which give it an umami flavor. Combined with coconut water, the result is a smooth, almost silky infusion that is both hydrating and deeply satisfying.

Coconut is more hydrating than watermelon, so your iced tea will be even more refreshing. To make coconut water iced tea at home, use a jar or bottle with a lid to mix three to five grams of loose-leaf tea with 470 ml of unsweetened coconut water. Let the tea steep in the refrigerator for at least six hours before straining and enjoy it neat or over ice. Remember that a strong, flavorful tea isn't achieved through a long steeping time, but rather through the amount of tea used. If you don't finish it, refrigerate your coconut iced tea for one to three days, as iced tea can spoil in the refrigerator.

How to choose the right tea to prepare iced tea with coconut water.

When making iced tea with coconut water, the most important decision is choosing the right tea. “A floral, refreshing, or mild-flavored tea works wonderfully” advises Elle Liu. “Coconut water brings its own sweetness and mineral depth, so carefully combining it with the tea can create a truly exceptional iced tea experience.”

For a floral experience, try jasmine or an aromatic oolong, such as THEORÓ's Phoenix in Solitary Blossom. "These teas have a naturally sweet floral note, jasmine, orchid, magnolia, and the subtle sweetness of coconut water enhances those delicate aromas without masking them. It's a harmonious combination, like perfume meeting fruit nectar," says Liu.

If you're looking for a refreshing drink, green tea is the ideal choice. "These teas are vibrant, clean, and slightly herbaceous, with high levels of polyphenols that contribute to their astringency and liveliness," explains Liu. "Coconut water naturally softens that flavor, toning down the intensity and leaving a smoother, more refreshing finish, especially on a hot day."

A more balanced option is to use black tea. “Dianhong tea has a naturally smooth body and malty notes that pair beautifully with the delicate sweetness of coconut water, similar to how people like to add a little sugar to their black tea” explains Liu. Once you try iced tea with coconut water, you won’t want to go back to regular water.
